4* Review: Freeing His Mercenary

Another Great Read in the Series
I have to start off by saying that if you haven’t read the first two books in this series you should do that before attempting to read this book. It begins where book 2 left off, and there is just too much information you would be missing to make this a decent read. That being said, this is another quickie read, than can be finished an a pretty short amount of time. This book was a bit more like the first in the pace department, the story itself is obviously supposed to be fast paced with action, but it seems a bit too rushed. Book two had slowed things down a bit and it made for a better read. That bring said the story once again is really good. In this story Rick has amnesia, and forgets Christian. Then Christian goes and does something that only serves to complicate matters a whole lot more! This one really pulls at your heart strings. This book, as the last one does, ends on a cliffhanger and I can only hope that book number four isn’t far behind. I’m hoping that it also gets back to the style of book two where the action is fast paced, but the while story itself doesn’t seem to be too rushed.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Teaser Thursday: Freeing His Mercenary

“Do you think Christian would let me get another car?” Elliot asked Rick as he drove them back towards the house.

It rankled that he needed to ask permission to do something as simple as buying a car. He was a grown man for goodness sake. He’d been taking care of himself for over a decade now.

“I don’t see why not, it’s practical. You and Laci need to be able to get around as well. That’s kind of hard to do with one vehicle.” Rick replied.

“I just hope Christian is in a practical mood.” Elliot muttered to himself.

They sat in silence for the rest of the ride home. Elliot noticed that Rick was quieter on the days he went for the hypnosis treatments. Elliot knew that the sessions weren’t going as well as they’d hoped He wanted Rick get his memories back. Although he knew that Rick was sure to fall back in love with Christian again, parts of his heart were still attracted to both men and he secretly wished that one of them would chose him. How fucked up is that?

Pulling into the driveway, Elliot placed the car in park. He walked around the car and helped Rick get out. As he opened the front door and headed for the sofa with Rick he overheard Christian and Laci talking in the kitchen.

“Daddy’s here. You can ask him now.” Laci said excitedly.

“Come on Sunshine, you have to give me a few seconds to think about what I’m going to say.” Christian told her. Elliot had a strong suspicion he already knew what his daughter had talked Christian into asking him.

“Hey Rick. How was your appointment?’ Christian asked as he walked into the living room with Laci at his heels.

“Same as always. A whole lot of nothing. I’m going to go lay down for a while. Even though it doesn’t seem be working, it still makes my brain tired.” Elliot watched as Rick grabbed the crutch that was leaning against the arm of the sofa and struggled to his feet. He started to take a step towards Rick, but paused when he saw Christian shaking his head no. Sighing, he sat down in the spot Rick had just vacated instead.

“Hey baby girl. Did you have fun coloring with Christian?” Elliot asked as Laci came sat down next to him.

“Yes, but Christian colored one of the dresses wrong. He knows that next time they need to be purple.” Laci stated seriously. “He also has something to ask you.” She added with a huge grin on her face.

“I was informed that a puppy would go great with lunch.”

“Oh, really?” Elliot asked with a raised eyebrow. He looked down at Laci who was nodding her head.

“Yes, so I told her I would ask you about it.” Christian stated as he came to stand right behind him. “A puppy is a lot of responsibility for a little girl, Sunshine. You’ll have to have your daddy’s help.”

Elliot found himself sucking in his breath. Hot damn. Christian had to see the effect he was having on his body. He had spent many nights dreaming about a repeat performance of their first night at the house, but had been keeping his distance out of respect for Christian’s wishes. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, Elliot looked back at his daughter.

“Laci, you know a puppy is a lot of work, right?”

“I know it is daddy, but I’m a big girl. I’ll take good care of it.”

“How about we discuss it more after you turn six?”

“Six?” Laci asked, wrinkling her forehead.

“Yes, six. You have to show me that you are responsible by picking up your things without being asked, getting ready for bed on time, and keeping your room clean.” Elliot stated. Laci already did those things most of the time, but he had to make her work for it.

“I can do that.” Laci replied before running to her room.

“I leave you here for an hour unsupervised and I come back to discover you’ve been making bargains with my five year old.” Elliot stated, looking Christian in the eyes for the first time in days.

“What can I say?” He asked with a shrug of his shoulder. “She has me wrapped around her little finger.”

Elliot chuckled. Of the three men, Laci always went to Christian first when she wanted something.

“I want to get a car.” He blurted out with absolutely no finesse. Christian stood there for a moment, thinking quietly before he spoke.

“Sure, you can get a car.”

“Look, the reason I want one is that it would be easier for us to have… wait, did you just say yes?” Elliot gaped at Christian. He had been prepared to list all of the reasons why he thought it would be a good idea for him to have his own car.

“Yep. Like you were saying, it would be easier if we had two vehicles, especially since you need to do more driving with Laci.”

“Okay. I mean, that’s good. I’ll get it taken care of then.” Elliot really didn’t know what to say.

“With everything that’s going on I know it isn’t safe for me to access my bank accounts. Since you’re the head man in charge I wanted to run it by you before I decided what to do next.”

“You get started looking for something reliable that isn’t going to draw a lot of attention. Let me know how much it is and I’ll get Chase to set you up with an account. I’m only in charge of the safety of everyone in this house. He handles all the cash.”

“Thank you.”

“No problem.”

Elliot sat there for a moment longer before standing to go to the kitchen. Just when he thought that he finally had Christian all figured out the man would turn around and do something that completely surprised him.

Fuck they found him and it was all Christian’s fault. If he hadn’t come, Elliot would have been long gone.

“Go to your room,” Christian ordered.

“What the hell? I know how to take care of myself.” Maybe not against trained killers, but it was the principle of everything.

As he glared at Christian, something hit the wall behind his head. There was a slight sting making Elliot touch his ear, only to have the tips of his fingers come back bloody. One second he was staring at the blood on his fingers, the next his body was being pulled to the floor. The weight of Christian’s much heavier frame covering his as their assailant shot off a few more rounds.

“I’m going to distract him. I want you to crawl to the other side of the room, closer to the kitchen.” Christian whispered into his ear, and if his treacherous body didn’t pick that moment to go all soft and buttery, as if Christian were whispering sweet nothings into his ear and not trying to save his life. What the hell is wrong with me?

Putting that question to the back of his mind, Elliot started to low crawl to the other side of the room as Christian lifted up to return fire. As he settled behind the loveseat, he realized he was trapped because someone had just broken in through the kitchen door.

“Oh, fuck.”

Not giving himself time to think, Elliot stood up and charged the man that came through the door, tackling him to the floor. Sitting on the man’s chest, he delivered a right hook to the man’s jaw, knocking him unconscious. Scrambling off the man, Elliot quickly grabbed the discarded gun. Elliot wanted to take a break to give his heart time to slow down before it beat out of his chest. Before he could put that plan to action, he swung around with the gun pointed at the man that just entered the kitchen.

“Stop right fucking there!”

“Whoa. There’s no need to be hostile.”

“What the fuck? You came here to kill me and I’m the one that’s hostile?”

“Hardly. Christian come get your guard dog.”

At Christian’s name, Elliot realized that it had gone quiet in the living room. What the hell is going on? Was Christian okay? Why the hell did that matter?

“Killian when did you get here?” Elliot nearly jumped out of his skin at Christian’s words directly behind him.

“Not too long ago. There were two others out there waiting to get in. I took care of them.” Killian stated before looking pointedly at Elliot. “Are you going to tell him to put the gun down or am I going to have to take it from him?”

“Elliot, he’s good.” Christian stated calmly.

He wasn’t so sure about that, no matter how velvety soft Christian’s voice sounded in his ear. They could be waiting for him to let his guard down so they could kidnap him to get the information on Logan they needed. He could probably take one of them, but not both. Before he could tell Christian how not good he was, the gun was taken from him. He looked at Killian with shock and awe.

“I really don’ like guns pointed at me.” He said to Elliot, then looked over his shoulder. “I take it he had nothing to do with Rick’s condition?”

***

Christian raised an eyebrow at Killian. “No. Logan has his daughter and from the very colorful messages I read on Elliot’s phone, he wants to see him. We were having a discussion on how to find Logan when we were attacked.”

“I already told you what I wanted and don’t talk about me as if I’m not standing right here.” Elliot huffed beside him.

Killian replied to Christian as if Elliot hadn’t just spoken. “So what are we going to do about him?” Killian paused for a moment gaging Christian for a moment before continuing. “The reason I came was because Chase has been trying to call you, but he keeps getting your voicemail. They’re going to be releasing Rick in a day or two.”

Trying not to show any emotion, Christian took his phone out of his pocket, he realized it was off, probably dead. “Fuck, okay.” Taking a deep breath, he got his thoughts in order. “Elliot is coming to the house with us. Logan wants him dead and he’s no good to us with a bullet in his head.”

“What the hell did I just say and I’m not going anywhere with you.” Elliot said in a huff.

Elliot stood there with a hand on his hip glaring at Christian. He tried to contain his laughter at the picture he made. “You said, ‘I already told you what I wanted and don’t talk about me as if I’m not standing right here.’ You’re going to come with us if you want to live long enough to get your daughter back.” Turning to Killian he said, “I’ll take him to the house, then go to the hospital.”

“All right. I’ll meet you there and stay with him until Chase and Cameron get home.”

“Oh my fucking God.” Elliot yelled before storming out of the kitchen.

“I wondered how long it would take for him to leave,” Killian said with a chuckle. “So, he’s legit?”

“Yeah, he was supposed to tell Logan where Rick was the night he was taken and didn’t. So I figure we help him, he helps us.”

“Yeah, I can see that. I’ll see you at the house.”

Christian nodded his head, then followed the sound of Elliot’s voice as he cursed him to hell. Finding him in his bedroom, zipping up a suitcase, Christian leaned against the door frame.

“If you wanted me to leave the fucking room you could have just asked. Then I would have kindly told you to go to your own fucking house so that you could talk to your friend.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He didn’t know why he was trying to get under Elliot’s skin. Maybe it gave him something to do besides obsessing about Rick, but he knew his mind wouldn’t stay away for long.

***

Elliot wanted to throw something at Christian’s head. Damn he didn’t know how Rick could put up with him. He slammed the door on those thoughts because all it would do was remind him that Rick didn’t like him like that.

“How long do I need to stay at your place?” He asked instead of acting out his thoughts.

“Until we find Logan and your daughter. I thought you were gay.”

He wondered how long it would take for Christian to get around to that question. “I’m bi actually, but I prefer to be with men. Much to Laci’s mother’s dismay.” Grabbing the suitcase off the bed, he moved to stand in front of Christian. “I’m ready to go.”

He followed behind Christian and no matter how hard he tried not to, his eyes wandered down to look at the man’s ass. He liked men after all and he had to not have a pulse for him not to find Christian attractive.

“I’ll follow you there.” He said when they moved towards Christian’s truck.

“We’re taking my truck.” Christian stated as he opened the passenger side door.

“Why? Will I be a prisoner there?”

“No nothing like that, but Logan knows your car and he can trace it.”

“I’m sure he knows your truck as well.” He stated not wanting to be confined to close quarters with him.

“But I have ways around that. Now get in.”

Yes, strangling him sounded good right about now. Putting his stuff in the truck, he got in with a huff. He didn’t care if he was acting like a child. Christian closed the door behind him and went to the driver side.

“Have you told Rick that you two were in a relationship?” He didn’t know why he asked that question, but for some odd reason he wanted to know the answer.

Christian threw him a side long glance then put the truck in drive. He thought he wouldn’t answer, but when they pulled out of his driveway Christian took a deep breath.

“No he doesn’t know. The doctor told me it’s a high chance he won’t get his memory back.”

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.”

“I thought you would be happy about that.”

“Why the hell would I be happy about that? Before we even hooked up, Rick told me he was in love with his best friend. I see that you finally got your head out of your ass and told him you felt the same way about him.”

Yes, he was upset that he’d been played, but he saw the way Rick looked when he talked about Christian. He wanted someone to look at him that way and would never intentionally get in the way of that.

“I didn’t tell him.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Because he was fucking kidnapped, then put in the hospital and when he woke up he didn’t fucking remember me.” Christian gritted out.

Well damn. What did he say to that? He didn’t know.

“Look I’m-“

“Don’t.” Christian said cutting off his apology.

They drove the rest of the way in silence. When Christian put his truck in park Elliot grabbed his bag from the back seat and went to stand in front of the truck to wait for Christian. He figured he needed a moment to himself. It had to hurt like a bitch for the man you love to wake up and not remember you. When Christian got out of the truck, they walked to house and entered.

“Good you’re here. Rick has been asking about you.” Killian said to Christian as they walked towards the kitchen.

“I’m leaving now. Elliot tell Killian what you know about your daughter and we will go from there.”

Elliot watched as Christian left the kitchen to leave.

“I don’t know what you have to do with all of this, but if you hurt him or Rick again, I will personally kill you myself.”

Elliot turned at Killian’s threatening words. He had no doubt the big bad mercenary would keep his promise. “Like I told Christian earlier, I had nothing to do with this and Rick knew that before he was taken.”

Killian glared at him for a moment more then took a seat at the table. “Okay, let’s get started.”
